How to Size a Fire Helmet Shield

How to Size a Fire Helmet Shield

When it comes to fire helmet shields, one size definitely doesn't fit all. Whether you're rocking a Phenix TL-2, a Cairns N6A, or a Pacific F18, getting the right size shield makes all the difference in how your lid looks and fits.

At Little River Customs, we want to make sure your custom leather shield sits clean, centered, and proud—just like it should.

Why Shield Sizing Matters

It’s not about vision or movement—it’s about matching the curve and dimensions of your helmet so your shield fits flush, mounts securely, and looks sharp. A properly sized shield makes installation easy and keeps the look balanced, especially for traditional lids like New Yorkers and TL-2s.

How to Measure Your Helmet for a Shield

To get the right fit, grab a ruler or tape measure and take two simple measurements:

1. Height

  • Measure from the brim of your helmet to the top notch of the shield holder.
  • This tells you the maximum height your shield can be.

2. Width

  • Measure the distance between the screw studs (or mounting holes) on the front of your helmet.
  • Your shield should be at least 0.5 inches wider than the outermost distance to mount properly.

Quick Sizing Guide by Helmet Type

Here’s a general reference for popular fire helmet models:

  • 6" Tall x 5.5" Wide
Great fit for plastic shells like Cairns 1010 & 1044.
  • 6.25" Tall x 6" Wide
Ideal for Pacific F18s and some Cairns models such as the 1010 & 1044.
  • 6.5" Tall x 6" Wide
Common size for Cairns N5A/N6A leather helmets.
  • 6.5" Tall x 6.25" Wide
Minimal size for Phenix TL-2 helmets. Will also fit Cairns N5A and N6A.
  • 6.5" Tall x 6.5" Wide
A wider version for the Phenix TL-2s—will appear large on the N5A/N6A.
