Shield Description
The Axe Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield places crossed fire axes at the center of the design. It is the dedicated crossed axe option in the collection, distinct from the skull and crossed axes artwork used by Ole Salty.
Three customizable text zones provide room for department, company, rank, name, radio identification, or other short wording supported by the product builder. Use the live preview to enter the text, select colors, and review the complete shield before ordering.
Crossed axe center artwork
The crossed axes remain the defining visual element. Lettering and color choices should support that center artwork rather than turn this page into another general custom helmet shield listing.
Each Axe shield is handmade from full-grain leather and hand painted. The textured main surface shown in the product gallery is part of the design presentation. Current variants are based on shield dimensions rather than separate texture or beveling upgrades.
No skull, flag, or officer bugle artwork is added to this dedicated crossed-axe design.
Three text zones
Use the three available areas to create a clear information hierarchy. A common approach is to separate department, primary identifier, and name or rank, but customers can use the supported fields according to their department or personal setup.
Sizing and mounting
Select the dimensions that match the helmet and shield holder from the six current size options. Measure the mounting area before ordering. The shield ships unpunched so the holes can be positioned for the customer’s hardware.
Axe versus Ole Salty
Choose Axe when crossed axes alone should be the primary emblem. For the skull-and-crossed-axes design with a more aggressive illustrated centerpiece, compare the Ole Salty Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield. For an officer-rank shield built around bugles, see the Bugle Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield.
The focused emblem also makes repeat department ordering easier to standardize.
How to Choose the Right Size Fire Helmet Shield
To choose the right fire helmet shield size, measure your helmet in two spots:
- Shield Height – Measure from the helmet brim up to the top notch on your shield holder.
- Shield Width – Measure from outside-to-outside of the mounting posts or screws.
These two measurements tell you exactly which custom fire helmet shield size fits your lid.

Texture vs Smooth and Beveling Details
These options are not offered on every shield. When available on a design, the explanations below show what each option changes in the finished shield.
Textured
- A tooled texture applied to the face of the leather. It adds visual bite and gives the shield a more aggressive, high-contrast look.
Smooth
- No surface texture added. The leather face remains flat and clean, giving the shield a sharper, more traditional appearance with full focus on layout and lettering.
Beveling/Tooling
- Hand-carved and stamped tooling with beveled detail around borders, numbers, or design elements. Adds depth and definition to the leather.

How to Mount your Fire Helmet Shield
Mounting your fire helmet shield is simple when you line it up correctly and drill or punch the holes the right way. Start by matching the shield to your helmet’s holder, check alignment, and mark your hole positions before drilling or punching. Once the hardware is secured, tighten everything evenly and break it in so it sits clean and square.
