How to Choose the Right Fire Helmet Shield Size

Fire Helmet Shield Sizing Guide

Get the height right first.

Measure your helmet, choose the closest shield height, then make a quick width check.

CHOOSE YOUR SHIELD HEIGHT FIRST

Choose the closest height at or slightly below your measurement. If you are between sizes, round down slightly.

1. Measure shield height

Remove your current shield if it hides the measuring points.

Start at the brim where the bottom of the shield sits.
Measure straight up to the top notch where the shield seats in the holder, not the top of the eagle or ornament.
Choose the closest shield height at or slightly below that measurement. When the measurement falls between available heights, rounding down slightly is usually the best fit.

On your tape measure: 6¼″ = 6.25″ and 6½″ = 6.5″.

Measured height: 6.3″ → choose a 6.25″-tall shield.

A 6.5″-tall shield will not fit because it is taller than the available space.

If your measurement matches an available height, choose that height. For example, 6.5″ of height → a 6.5″-tall shield.

Round down to the closest available height. Choosing a shield much shorter than the measurement can leave it too short to reach the top notch.

2. Make a quick width check

On most helmets, width usually falls in line once you choose the height. Measure outside-to-outside across the mounting studs or screws, then allow ¾–1 inch of extra shield width total. This is a minimum-width and best-fit guide; you can choose a wider look.

Example: 5.5″ across the studs → 6.25″ minimum recommended shield width. A 6″-wide shield adds only ½″ and falls below that guide; 6.5″ wide gives 1″ extra.

Phenix TL-2: choose a wider shield

The TL-2 usually needs 6.25″ or 6.5″ of width. Choose the correct height first, then check the studs to select between those wider options.

Quick fit answers

What if my height falls between sizes?

Choose the closest available height below your measurement. For example, 6.3 inches of available height calls for the 6.25-inch option. Rounding down slightly is usually best; rounding up to 6.5 inches would make the shield too tall.

Does my helmet model or aftermarket holder change how I measure?

Use the same two measuring points: brim to top notch for height, and outside-to-outside across the studs for width. Measure the hardware actually on your helmet. Your measurement takes priority over the general model reference chart.

Can extra width make a taller shield fit?

No. Height and width are separate measurements. Choose the correct height first. A wider shield can change the look, but it cannot make a shield that is too tall fit under the top notch.
