Custom Artwork Preparation
A better artwork file gives a custom patch or helmet shield a cleaner starting point
You do not need to be a graphic designer to send artwork. You do need to send the clearest version you can find and explain what must remain unchanged.
The quick answer
AI or EPS artwork is preferred because vector files can be resized without losing sharpness. A clean PDF, SVG or high resolution PNG or JPG may also be workable. Send the best file available instead of running it through a random converter that may only place a blurry image inside a vector container.
Vector artwork
Vector files are built from paths rather than a fixed grid of pixels. Common formats include AI, EPS and SVG. A properly created vector PDF may also contain usable paths.
Raster artwork
PNG and JPG files are made from pixels. They can work when the image is large, sharp, evenly lit and free of compression damage.
Best files to send
| File type | Usually useful | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| AI or EPS | Preferred | Fonts outlined and linked artwork included |
| SVG | Often excellent | Shapes and text display correctly |
| Often workable | Created from original artwork rather than a scan | |
| PNG | Can work | High resolution with clean edges |
| JPG | Can work | Large, sharp and not heavily compressed |
| Screenshot | Last resort | May require recreation and missing details cannot be recovered |
Why automatic vector converters are unreliable
Some converters simply package the original pixel image inside a new file. Others trace every blurry edge and create hundreds of unnecessary points. The filename may say SVG or EPS while the underlying artwork is still unusable.
If the only available file is a screenshot, send it honestly. It is easier to evaluate the real source than untangle a badly converted copy.
For leather patch hats
Small lettering, thin outlines and crowded center details can disappear when reduced to patch size. A simplified mark often looks stronger than a miniature version of every element.
For helmet shields
The artwork must share space with department wording, company number, rank and other identification. The main shapes need enough room to remain recognizable.
Artwork submission checklist
- Send the original AI or EPS file when available.
- Include the department’s approved colors or reference material.
- Identify wording, numbers and symbols that cannot change.
- Explain where the design will be used.
- Do not crop off borders, text or important details.
- Include a clean reference image if the vector file does not preview correctly.
Send what you have
A perfect file is helpful, but it is not required before asking a question. We can review the best available file and explain what can translate cleanly to leather.

Is a vector file required?
No. AI or EPS is preferred, but a clean PDF, SVG or high resolution PNG or JPG may be workable.
Can a blurry screenshot be fixed?
Sometimes the design can be recreated, but details that are missing from the image cannot be recovered automatically.
Should text be converted to outlines?
Yes, when possible. Outlining text prevents missing font files from changing the appearance.
Can detailed artwork be simplified?
Yes. Simplification may be necessary so the central idea stays recognizable at the final size.
