Shield Description
The Standard Issue Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield is a straightforward traditional front built around a large center identifier and clear upper and lower text areas. It is designed for firefighters and departments that want an easy-to-recognize layout without decorative artwork crowding the shield.
Use the upper field for a rank, company designation, department abbreviation, or similar identification. The large center area keeps the primary number or identifier prominent, while the lower field provides space for a name or additional department information. Colors, lettering, outlines, and other available details can be selected through the live customization tool.
Choose a textured or smooth finish
The Standard Issue is available with either a textured or smooth main body.
Textured
Adds a tooled surface to the main leather body for more visual depth and contrast.
Smooth
Keeps the main body flat and clean, placing more emphasis on the lettering and traditional layout.
Each shield is handmade from full-grain leather. The live preview lets you review the selected text, colors, and layout before placing the order.
Sizing and mounting
Choose the shield dimensions that match your helmet using the available product options. Measure the helmet and shield holder before ordering rather than selecting a size based only on the helmet name.
The shield ships unpunched so its mounting holes can be positioned for the customer’s helmet hardware. The sizing and mounting guides displayed on the product page provide additional instructions.
How Standard Issue differs
Choose Standard Issue when you want a conventional layout with a large center number and dedicated upper and lower identification areas.
For a more stripped-down design, compare the Bare Bones Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield. For a raised center oval and deeper dimensional detailing, see the Legacy Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield.
The structured layout also supports coordinated department orders with individual identification.
How to Choose the Right Size Fire Helmet Shield
To choose the right fire helmet shield size, measure your helmet in two spots:
- Shield Height – Measure from the helmet brim up to the top notch on your shield holder.
- Shield Width – Measure from outside-to-outside of the mounting posts or screws.
These two measurements tell you exactly which custom fire helmet shield size fits your lid.

Texture vs Smooth and Beveling Details
These options are not offered on every shield. When available on a design, the explanations below show what each option changes in the finished shield.
Textured
- A tooled texture applied to the face of the leather. It adds visual bite and gives the shield a more aggressive, high-contrast look.
Smooth
- No surface texture added. The leather face remains flat and clean, giving the shield a sharper, more traditional appearance with full focus on layout and lettering.
Beveling/Tooling
- Hand-carved and stamped tooling with beveled detail around borders, numbers, or design elements. Adds depth and definition to the leather.

How to Mount your Fire Helmet Shield
Mounting your fire helmet shield is simple when you line it up correctly and drill or punch the holes the right way. Start by matching the shield to your helmet’s holder, check alignment, and mark your hole positions before drilling or punching. Once the hardware is secured, tighten everything evenly and break it in so it sits clean and square.
