Shield Description
The Backstep Firefighter Helmet Shield is the clean old-school design in the Little River Customs lineup. Its broad upper rocker, oversized center identifier, and compact lower banner recall the straightforward helmet fronts associated with traditional backstep firehouse culture.
Old-school three-zone layout
The upper banner provides room for department, company, rank, or another short heading. A large central field emphasizes the primary number or identifier, while the lower banner supports a name, location, assignment, or other concise wording available in the live preview.
Backstep deliberately avoids the layered artwork, illustrated backgrounds, and dense scrollwork used by more decorative shields. That simpler structure makes the product the appropriate result for searches involving old-school, traditional, or backstep firefighter helmet shields.
Smooth or textured leather body
Choose Yes to add texture to the main body of the shield or select No to keep it smooth. The rocker-and-center layout remains the same in both versions. Use the live preview to coordinate the leather field, lettering, borders, and identifier colors.
The gallery shows finished shields in several color combinations plus digital previews of the basic layout. Photographs illustrate prior configurations and do not automatically determine another order’s choices.
Six sizes and unpunched mounting
Each Backstep shield is handmade from full-grain leather. Six height-and-width combinations are available. Measure the helmet’s shield holder before choosing a size. The finished shield ships unpunched so mounting holes can be positioned for the customer’s hardware.
Backstep versus The Deuce
Choose Backstep when a clean, traditional three-zone layout is the priority. Choose The Deuce Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield when decorative side scrollwork and a more stylized multi-zone face better match the intended look.
Confirm all wording, spelling, capitalization, colors, texture, and dimensions in the live preview before submitting the personalized order.
The restrained face also supports consistent department layouts across individually personalized shield orders.
How to Choose the Right Size Fire Helmet Shield
To choose the right fire helmet shield size, measure your helmet in two spots:
- Shield Height – Measure from the helmet brim up to the top notch on your shield holder.
- Shield Width – Measure from outside-to-outside of the mounting posts or screws.

Texture vs Smooth and Beveling Details
These options are not offered on every shield. When available on a design, the explanations below show what each option changes in the finished shield.
Textured
- A tooled texture applied to the face of the leather. It adds visual bite and gives the shield a more aggressive, high-contrast look.
Smooth
- No surface texture added. The leather face remains flat and clean, giving the shield a sharper, more traditional appearance with full focus on layout and lettering.
Beveling/Tooling
- Hand-carved and stamped tooling with beveled detail around borders, numbers, or design elements. Adds depth and definition to the leather.

How to Mount your Fire Helmet Shield
Mounting your fire helmet shield is simple when you line it up correctly and drill or punch the holes the right way. Start by matching the shield to your helmet’s holder, check alignment, and mark your hole positions before drilling or punching. Once the hardware is secured, tighten everything evenly and break it in so it sits clean and square.
