Shield Description
The Legacy Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield is the dimensional option for firefighters who want a raised center oval and deep beveled detailing. Its purpose is distinct from the flatter traditional layouts elsewhere in the collection: the leatherwork itself is the visual centerpiece.
The raised oval frames the main company number, rank, radio identifier, or other available center text. Rocker areas organize the department, name, or additional identification around it. Use the live preview to select the available wording, colors, and layout choices before ordering.
Raised center oval and beveled leatherwork
Each Legacy shield is handmade from full-grain leather. Beveled borders and the raised oval create visible depth around the central identification area, giving the design a more sculpted appearance than Standard Issue, Bare Bones, or the flatter Classic configurations.
The current options allow the main leather body to be textured or left smooth. Texture adds a worked surface around the raised elements, while the smooth option creates a cleaner contrast between the flat body and beveled details.
Custom identification and color
Customize the available department, company, rank, name, number, or identifier fields through the product builder. Color selections can emphasize the raised oval, borders, lettering, and surrounding leatherwork. Review the live preview carefully for spelling, capitalization, and layout before submitting the order.
Sizing and mounting
Select the dimensions that match the helmet and shield holder. Measure the mounting area before ordering rather than relying only on the helmet model name. The Legacy ships unpunched so the mounting holes can be positioned for the customer’s hardware.
How Legacy differs
Choose Legacy when the raised oval and deep beveling are the deciding features. For an old-school rocker layout with optional beveling, compare the Classic Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield. For a simpler traditional large-number layout, see the Standard Issue Leather Firefighter Helmet Shield.
How to Choose the Right Size Fire Helmet Shield
To choose the right fire helmet shield size, measure your helmet in two spots:
- Shield Height – Measure from the helmet brim up to the top notch on your shield holder.
- Shield Width – Measure from outside-to-outside of the mounting posts or screws.
These two measurements tell you exactly which custom fire helmet shield size fits your lid.

Texture vs Smooth and Beveling Details
These options are not offered on every shield. When available on a design, the explanations below show what each option changes in the finished shield.
Textured
- A tooled texture applied to the face of the leather. It adds visual bite and gives the shield a more aggressive, high-contrast look.
Smooth
- No surface texture added. The leather face remains flat and clean, giving the shield a sharper, more traditional appearance with full focus on layout and lettering.
Beveling/Tooling
- Hand-carved and stamped tooling with beveled detail around borders, numbers, or design elements. Adds depth and definition to the leather.

How to Mount your Fire Helmet Shield
Mounting your fire helmet shield is simple when you line it up correctly and drill or punch the holes the right way. Start by matching the shield to your helmet’s holder, check alignment, and mark your hole positions before drilling or punching. Once the hardware is secured, tighten everything evenly and break it in so it sits clean and square.
